Concept of RPL
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process that allows the skills and knowledge a candidate already possess to be formally recognized. This might include skills applicants picked up on the job or from other life experiences that do not necessarily include formal training. Recognition of prior learning suits people who have industry relevant:
• WORK SKILLS OR KNOWLEDGE
• PAID OR UNPAID WORK EXPERIENCE
• LIFE EXPERIENCE
• COMMUNITY WORK EXPERIENCE
• ACADEMIC QUALIFICATION COMPLETED IN INSTITUTIONS NOT RECOGNIZED IN AUSTRALIA
Recognition of prior learning provides applicants with a full or part qualification, which can be without duplication of training. RPL also identifies further training applicants may need to complete a qualification and can provide a pathway to higher qualifications.
RPL Assessor will discuss evidences needed to support the application and may still need to meet on-the-job components of the qualification which can be assessed in the workplace.
To drive improvements in recognition of prior learning (RPL), the Department of Education, Training and the Arts has developed assessment resources in consultation with industry to ensure RPL assessment is practical, efficient and relevant.
These assessment resources (RPL Assessor Kits) help registered training organizations provide streamlined, industry relevant recognition of prior learning services and processes for a number of trade and non-trade qualifications. The resources focus on the development of assessment materials in qualifications at Certificate III level and above, with particular emphasis on trade qualifications, and non-trade qualifications in high demand or skill shortage areas.
The RPL Assessor Kits are protected under copyright which extends to all content including tables, headings, text treatments, photographs, stylised text, etc. The RPL Assessor Kits may not be reproduced or copied without express written permission.
